But the Upstate also has its own urban areas, and a fast-growing industrial base centered around the twin cities of Greenville and Spartanburg.
Greenville is the largest city and the focal point of industry and finance; but prides itself on being a refined and gracious Southern city with a thriving downtown. Spartanburg and Anderson are other cities in the region. Near Anderson is the small town of Clemson, home of Clemson University.
The area also has become a shopping mecca, and the highways are dotted with outlet stores and malls. Farther off the beaten track, hiking, cycling, and boating are favorite activities.
