Georgia, known as the “Peach State” and the “Empire State of the South”, is located above the State of Florida. The northern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a mountain range in the vast mountain system of the Appalachians. There are big cities like Atlanta, and smaller suburbs for quiet retreats. Inland locations like Lake Lanier are popular destinations along with coastal areas like Sea Island and St. Mary's.
Georgia has mild winters, fantastic golf courses, architecture, and restaurants filled with Southern charm. There are numerous beach towns on Georgia's Atlantic Coast that are outstanding retirement destinations, and the rest of the state also features many active adult communities.
Athens, Georgia is continually ranked as one of the "Best Places in America To Retire". Due large in part to it's strong health-care system, affordable living and pedestrian-friendly areas, Athens seems to have it all. There are plenty of things to do including golfing, bicycling, wine tasting, and listening to live music.
