Aiken - South Carolina Golf Course Communities

Communities found in this category are centered around golfing facilities ranging from 9-hole courses, through executive 18-hole courses, all the way up to the most challenging and demanding championship courses. Many of these master planned communities also feature such other recreational amenities as tennis courts, fitness centers, swimming complexes, and marinas.

The Aiken Region of South Carolina lies along the western border of the state, the Savannah River. It is dominated by two factors: its proximity to Augusta, Georgia, only 30 miles from the town of Aiken; and horses.

For the town of Aiken is one of the premier spots in the nation for horse breeding, training, and riding. In the town itself, horses have the right of way, and riders and carriages are a common site. Aiken is home to fox hunts, equestrian events, and the oldest continually-used polo field in the country.

But there is more to Aiken, and the surrounding area, than horses. Aiken was selected in 1997 as one of ten All-America Cities by the National Civic League. The town has three historic districts, with over 70 homes and buildings listed. The many shops and galleries, golf courses and parks add to the charm of the area, and the mild climate, low cost of living, and close proximity to urban amenities attract many newcomers.
