The South Carolina Coastal Area represents a broad stretch of coast beginning at the Georgia border, sweeping past the historic colonial port of Charleston, and continuing to the North Carolina border just beyond vibrant Myrtle Beach, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Southeast, and the location of many retirement communities.

This northern stretch is more properly called "the Grand Strand." The beach itself is over 60 miles of white sand, from North Carolina to Georgetown, and is popular for swimming, surfing, sailing--even bicycling. And Myrtle Beach proudly claims to be the world capital of golfing: more than 120 courses exist in the area.

Beyond the Grand Strand begins the low country proper, characterized by an indented coastline dotted with small towns and dominated by Charleston, one of the truly great cities of America. Since 1670, Charleston has survived fire, earthquake, war, flood and hurricane with its unique character and culture intact. It zealously guards its historical character, requiring new construction to blend with the gracious architecture of older days.

South of Charleston is the charming town of Beaufort, site of numerous Hollywood productions (most notably "The Big Chill") that made use of its antebellum character. Further south lies Hilton Head, one of the most popular resorts in the South, attracting 2.5 million visitors each year—from families with young children to the ultra-rich patronizing its world-class hotels, restaurants, and golf courses.
