Alexandria is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 128,284. Located along the Western bank of the Potomac River, Alexandria is approximately six miles (9.6 km) south of downtown Washington, DC. The DC metro consists of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, counties and the independent cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas, and Manassas Park. It is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Northern Virginia is the wealthiest and most diverse (in terms of both ethnicities and nationalities represented) region of Virginia.
