North Carolina has quietly become one of the most popular states in the country for retirement. North Carolina was the first of the United States to be settled by English colonists, even though the settlement disappeared into legend as the "Lost Colony of Roanoke." Since that time, it has become one of the most densely-settled states, ranked 10th in population. In the past decade alone, North Carolina's population has increased by more than 16 percent.
