The Upstate Region of South Carolina is a thriving region located between the two major metropolitan areas of Atlanta and Charlotte. The region is characterized by numerous small towns set in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which rise on the northern border of the state. But the Upstate also has its own urban areas, and a fast-growing industrial base centered around the twin cities of Greenville and Spartanburg.
Greenville is the largest city and the focal point of industry and finance; but prides itself on being a refined and gracious Southern city with a thriving downtown. Spartanburg and Anderson are other cities in the region. Near Anderson is the small town of Clemson, home of Clemson University.
The area also has become a shopping mecca, and the highways are dotted with outlet stores and malls. Farther off the beaten track, hiking, cycling, and boating are favorite activities.
