The South Carolina Low Country represents a broad stretch of coast beginning at the Georgia border, sweeping past the historic colonial port of Charleston, and continuing to the North Carolina border just beyond vibrant Myrtle Beach, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Southeast, and the location of many retirement communities.
This northern stretch is more properly called "the Grand Strand." The beach itself is over 60 miles of white sand, from North Carolina to Georgetown, and is popular for swimming, surfing, sailing--even bicycling. Further south lies Hilton Head, one of the most popular resorts in the South, attracting 2.5 million visitors each year—from families with young children to the ultra-rich patronizing its world-class hotels, restaurants, and golf courses.
