In large part due to its warm, sunny climate and relatively low cost of living, Arizona has been a retirement mecca for generations. In fact, the very first age-restricted community--Sun City--was built here in the 1960s. That concept has most fully flowered on the other side of the country, in Florida; yet Arizona can lay first claim to the concept, and many people still prefer the dry climate of the desert state. There are three major population centers in Arizona: Tucson in the south; the gigantic Phoenix metropolitan area in the south-central region; and Flagstaff in the north-central region. Arizona's far northern region is vast and largely empty, consisting of widely-separated small settlements and large tracts of national parks, monuments, and recreation areas.
